World Team championship: losing to India, the Russian team took the fourth place

In the final round of the World Team Championship, which has just finished, the Russian team had to win against India in order to win medals. India is not the most dangerous rival for the top teams, as the world champion Vishy Anand, is not playing for his team (which is usual in the last period). This was confirmed more than once by the tournament.

However, the Russians in Ningbo had to drink the cup of disappointment to the bottom. Only Alexander Grischuk on the first board confidently won against Pentala Harikrishna. On the third board Peter Svidler played a risky continuation of the Pirc-Ufimtsev defence, but went under a brilliant attack of his opponent, Grandmaster Ganguly, and quickly resigned. On the fourth board Nikita Vitiugov failed to implement a positional advantage, his game against Parimarjan Negi came to a peaceful outcome.

On the second board Ian Nepomniachtchi in an attempt to win the game «gone too far» and got into a bad endgame against Krishnan Sasikiran. The opponent eventually won the game. India won the match with a score of 2.5-1.5.

Even in case of draw in the match the Russian team would remain on the same fourth place, which it took in the end. The third place was taken by the Ukrainian team. The second was the host of the tournament, the Chinese. The championship, as we reported, was won by the Armenian team — the Olympic champion in 2006 and 2008.
