One of the leaders of the Wijk aan Zee tournament Levon Aronian satisfied with a draw against Loek Van Wely in a well-studied branch of the Queen'с Gambit. The game turned out to be unexciting. 

In the first decisive game of the fifth round American General Motors Nakamura defeated Czech General Motors Davey Навара. Nakamura gained advantage due to his original decisions in the rare branch of English opening.

After the game Навара noted: «It seemed that I've developed all the pieces, but after a3, I saw that taking Knight back on c6 wasn't the best decisions. I took it on a6 — which wasn't any better. So I got worse. I think Nakamura fred get the prize for the best game in this round; and I'м playing bad, I know I do, but I don't know what to do with that».

Apparently, Czech General Motors had to risk playing 18…f5!.
