The only decisive game of the sixth round of the Governor’с cup (Saratov, Russia) ended by Nikita Vitiugov defeating Dmitry Andreikin in a French Defence. 

In other games that happened to finish in draws the epic duel between Al Morozevich and Alexei Shirov is worth of interest. The rivals chose to play the вери variant of French Defence which was played earlier at Гранд Slam Ivanchuk – Carlsen and three times in Saratov (Morozevich – Vitiugov, Shirov – Vitiugov and now Shirov – Morozevich).

Competitors avoided following their predecessors’ games and on the 11^th move Latvian Spanish creatively sacrificed his bishop.

11.Ne2!? (if that’с an amateur'с move you can boldly call it a blunder) 11…c4 12.Bxh7+ Kxh7 13.Ng5+  with irrational complications. 

This тайм fortune didn’t smile on Morozevich who couldn’t convert his overwhelming advantage. However, at some point Shirov also have had some chances to win.

19.Nxd5! Nxg6 (wrong would be 19…exd5? because of 20.Rxf8+!) 20.Rxa7 Nxa7 21.Nxb6 Bd7 (21…Nh4!? seems to be more accurate).

White could have tried 22.Nxd7!? Qxd7 23.d5!, and 24.e6 on 23…exd5 in a better position. Instead of that Shirov chose 22.Qb7?! Bc6 23.Qxa7 Nh4! – White won back the piece and stayed with three extra pawns, but just for a while since White developed a vigorous counterattack: 24.Qc7 (the only possibility) 24…Nxg2!.  After the 30^th move Alexei started to make mistake and the drawn game seems as a miracle from that point. Moreover this is the sixth in a row draw for him in this tournament!

Morozevich continues dominating the competition with 5 points out of 6. Tomorrow there’с a day off for the participants.
