Wijk aan Zee: Giri-Radjabov Sharp Battle Ended Peacefully

Giri-Radjabov encounter was first to finish in the second round of Wijk aan Zee super-GM tournament (Netherlands). Referring to Emil Sutovsky'с evaluation on the эйр of Chess-News radio, the draw agreement that took place was somewhat premature.

GIRI — RADJABOV
Modern Benoni Defense
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 O-O 6.Be3 c5 7.Nge2 Nc6 8.d5 Ne5 9.Ng3 h5 10.Be2 a6 11.a4 e6 12.O-O exd5 13.cxd5
This kind of positions are traditionally referred to Benoni Defense, although in today'с practice they mostly come out of King'с Indian Defence.
13…Bd7!? 14.h3 h4 15.Nh1 b5 16.Bg5 b4 17.Nb1 c4 18.Bxh4

White sacrificed a pawn, but their pieces are considerably more актив than the rival'с ones.
18…Re8N
In Dreev- Espinosa F. encounter (Merida, 2003) White chose 18…Qa5.
19.f4 Nd3 20.Bxd3 cxd3 21.Qxd3 Rxe4!
Now after 22.Bxf6 one could take on f6 and then on b2; perhaps, 22…Qb6+! is even stronger with an idea of …Re3.
22.Nd2 Re8 23.Ng3 Qb6+ 24.Kh2

Here rivals agreed to a draw. After 24…Re3! 25.Nc4! Rxd3 26.Nxb6 Rb8 27.Bxf6 Rxb6 White has enough compensation for the sacrificed pawn in the endgame.
(Mikhail Golubev'с commentary).
